Product Description A low-level intelligence operative working for the U.S. ambassador in France joins forces with an American spy to stop a terrorist attack in Paris.
Amazon.com An uncomplicated, moderately entertaining action film, From Paris With Love offers an enthusiastic performance by John Travolta as a just-this-side-of-crazy agent and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) as the low-level operative newly partnered with him. Outwardly an aide to the U.S. Ambassador in France, James Reese (Rhys Meyers) is also a low-level CIA operative, tasked with generally mundane duties. Then his inside contact offers him a high-level assignment that could lead to a promotion to full agent. All Reese has to do is drive CIA agent Charlie Wax (Travolta) around Paris on an undisclosed mission. But Wax is a shoot first, don't bother with questions kinda guy, and the straitlaced Reese quickly finds himself riding shotgun to a killing-spree through Paris' underground drug sub-culture. The drugs lead the obviously opposite duo to a hidden terrorist cell, and they race to stop the suicide bombers' plot. Wax's wise-cracking, one-on-many fight scenes are adequately entertaining--especially when he flings bad guys down a curving staircase, as Reese tries to avoid getting hit by the bodies--but the action generally leaves you wanting more. An undesirable characteristic in an action movie. Based on a story by Luc Besson, (The Fifth Element and The Transporter movies), one can't help wonder if the complexity of the story and characters could have been improved if he'd written the screenplay himself. However, the simplistic story offers a few surprises and laugh-worthy one-liners. The climactic final chase scene--Agent Wax hanging out the window of a speeding Audi, armed with heavy artillery and a driver with nerves of steel, as he attempts to stop one phase of the planned attack--is as impossible as one could hope for in this kind of movie. And hearing Travolta call his burger a “royale with cheese” is almost worth the rest of the movie. --Jill Corddry

Sorry John, but you didn't convience me in this movie. September 8, 2010 M.V. (TX, USA) Well, there are the good guys and the bad guys, and you pretty much know what's going to happen from the start. John T. does not come across as the crazy good guy very well, and what is with that scarf John? Anyway, typical action movie, so you get what you get. If you are a fan of John Travolta you will probably like it.
So Cheesy It Smells September 6, 2010 Shawn Bachman Wow! Some of the cheesiest lines and action I've ever seen. Old man Travolta tries to hustle but moves like a fat kid bundled up in a tight leather jacket and neckerchief in every scene, chowing down Royales with cheese 'cuz that's what cornballs do in Paris. I think Barney or the Teletubbies pack more action and have better lines than these two clowns. Did somebody seriously get paid to make this??!! I can't believe I paid $4.99 for this trash. I hope Travolta uses my money for a larger sized jacket. So he can stop moving like a Teletubby wrapped up in a diaper.
Generally, I LOVE Action Movies. This one was TERRIBLE. September 3, 2010 Ronica (New York, NY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was literally one of the worst action movies I have ever seen. It has really dumb sucker humor (jokes based on old humor you've already heard in other movies) and images of explosions/heavy artillery in lieu of good acting or film-making. And every Pakistani in this movie is a terrorist or influenced by a terrorist? Why is that a normal plot device and not just using racial stereotypes to shortcut having to do anything creative?
The plot is incredibly well-worn and completely predictable, if even in pieces. You may not know how the scene or situation will start (i.e the twists and turns some people allude to) but once the scene has started you can immediately pick the three most likely scenarios that will ensue, and be right. Is that comforting to you, in an action film? if so, this is the film for you. If you expect something more fun or smart, with good action or good plot, I say pass this one up. You can definitely find better.
Guns and Bombs in Paris September 2, 2010 Sang (CA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
"From Paris With Love" is the standard odd-couple male-bonding action movie with big explosions, fast car chases and a high body count. There is a slim plot to justify the action: the wild gunslinger agent (Travolta) and the mild-mannered, multi-lingual diplomat's assistant (Rhys Meyers) assigned to drive him around are the heroes out to save the world from terrorists. This gives them the license to shoot and kill a whole bunch of Asian and Middle-Eastern extras. Also in the mix is a barely credible subplot about "love" and "betrayal", which is as expected resolved with guns and explosives. The saving grace is that Travolta and Rhys Meyers do have some chemistry on screen, with the former acting as a larger-than-life mentor to the latter, teaching him the way of the gun, literally. However, this movie ends up giving the audience a version of the typical male fantasy of a one-dimensional hero who gets to shoot left and right but is almost never shot and who is only vulnerable by having feelings for the untrustworthy opposite sex. And unfortunately, not very much else.
Excellent choice. August 20, 2010 Walter E. Dewitt (Binghamton, NY USA) The movie was action packed and funny. John Travolta was at his best. For that discounted price, it made the movie better.
